Ghosts and haunting phenomena have been
reported throughout history. Some of the worlds oldest writings include
interraction between the living and dead. As far back as 3000 years
ago the Ancient Greek civilisation was making mention of haunted dwellings
and poltergeist type activity. Ancient Chinese records dating back
to 3000BC mention an early form of communication with the dead. Nearly
all religions base their teachings on the understanding that there
is an existance after death. Many of us are hard-wired into believing
our religious teachings despite lack of scientific proof. To be able
to prove the existance of life after death has always been one of mankind's
primary quests.
Many tools and methods for communicating
with the the spirit world have been devised over the years. Perhaps
the most popular of all is the "Ouija Board" or "Talking
Board", which became particularly popular during the early part
of the 19th Century...there are too many methods to list on this page...I
have listed some of the more popular methods below.
I am no expert on such forms of communication
devices and would recommend that any would-be users seek further information
before use. In an effort to be resposible, I have included the cautionary
warning, for your perusal.
A
Brief Cautionary Video...
Before using a
Ouija board, be aware of the potential dangers of playing with
this so-called Victorian "Parlour Game".

The
"Ouija Board"...derives
it's name from French and German for "Yes"...Oui & Ja, so it translates to a Yes-Yes
board. These instruments came with a pointer or planchette. Fingers
were place on the planchette and questions were asked of spirits attracted
to the board...the planchette would then point to individual letters
or numbers on the board to answer the questions. This particular picture
shows a fine example of a 1940's William Fuld Ouija Board, which recently
sold on Ebay for £80:00. Psychics and Mediums warn of the dangers
of using this form of spirit communication. They claim that spirits
are often very reluctant to leave once they have been invited through
the board. Obviously this type of communication is open to trickery
by any joker amongst the seance members.
Psychic Art...sometimes
referred to as spirit art. Psychic art is where a person or persons
are able to communicate with a spirit and represent them in picture
form. Even a person who as no previous experience in art or mediumship
may be able to do this. A planchette, similar to that used with
a ouija board is fitted with a pencil/pen and placed on a sheet
of paper...fingers are the placed on the planchette and writing
or drawing may take place. This was very popular at the start of
the 1900's.
Table Tipping...a
group of people sit around a table, with their hands slightly
resting upon the table, making sure that no other part of their
body is touching it, when all is relaxed and quiet, one person
can start to ask out loud if there are 'spirits' there who would
like to communicate, the 'spirits' will then use the table as
a way of communicating by making it move and sometimes hopefully
it will actually lift from the floor.
The "Most Haunted" paranormal team have had some very
impressive results using this communication method.
Scrying...
derived from the Anglo Saxon word "desry", which means "reveal".
It is an ancient form of divination and is one of the earliest
forms recorded in history. Records show scrying was first used
in China around 3000bc. Over the years different kinds of people
have used a variety of different things for scrying eg Druids practiced
cloud scrying, gypsies are know for using crystal balls and some
mediums will gaze into mirrors. The most famous person known for
scrying was Notradamus, it was said he used a black mirror or a
bowl filled with ink for his predictions.
Mediumship...
is best described as contact and communication with the Spirit
world through various methods, including; intuitive, physical
and trance. Photo to left is Derek Acora...a popular TV Spirit
Medium.
Intuitive Mediumship... the Medium
can sense the person is with them, and gives messages through
clairvoyance (seeing), and clairaudience (hearing), and clairsentience
(feeling). This is the most common way of Mediumship.
Trance Mediumship...
the Medium "withdraws" themselves consciously, and
lets a person in the Spirit world talk through them. This can
be done while the Medium is partially conscious or unconscious,
and is often referred to as "channelling".
Physical Mediumship...
when a Spirit, through a Medium, can physically make things happen,
such as moving solid objects or making objects appear or disappear.
Another kind of Physical Mediumship involves a person who can
manifest Spirits through "ectoplasm", which is the
actual physical manifestation of a Spirit, which is often witnessed
by others. This is a fairly rare branch of Mediumship, but one
which has a large amount of documentation around it.
